Brae Farm Harvest Notes March 21, 2025
It's feeling very autumnal in the garden this week. Quite a few of the summer crops are slowing down or finishing up as we transition into cool-season production.
I've added red kuri pumpkins to the harvest list, alongside baby leeks, and small quantities of watermelon radish and purple daikon. We may have a first harvest of gai lan.
We have an abundance of medium-sized spinach, which could be used for a staff meal.
Red spring onions are looking particularly good this week, at a nice slender size.
The rhubarb has put on a lot of growth if the kitchen can take a bulk quantity anytime in the next few weeks.
Tomatillos are more-or-less finished. There is a small quantity of green fruit left on the plants.
Mal's beans are only producing very small, curved beans now. If they're not needed for the kitchen, we'll clear that bed. We should have useful quantities of roc d'or and simba beans for another 1-2 weeks.
We'll do another harvest of medium-large zucchini on Monday and Tuesday. We should be able to transition back to picking flowers for at least another week. They will likely finish up in early April.
Tomatoes are still producing well, but slowing down in the cooler weather. Two harvests a week is probably enough going forward.
We've harvested all the large Detroit beetroot, and we'll only have smaller beets for the next few weeks.
Thanks, Jo
